Radon is the threat in your home you cannot see, smell, or taste. The EPA places most of Jefferson County and central Kentucky in Radon Zone 1, the highest predicted indoor level on the federal map. Aqua Lock installs radon mitigation systems sized to the home, tested before and after, and backed by a 5-year warranty on the radon fan that does the work.
The numbers behind our foundation, waterproofing, and radon work in Kentucky since 2006:
- In business since 2006
- 10,000-plus Kentucky homes repaired
- 5-year warranty on every radon fan; Lifetime Transferable Warranty on the broader waterproofing system

What Radon Is, and Why Kentucky Homes Need to Pay Attention
Radon is a naturally occurring gas produced when uranium in soil and rock breaks down. It is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. The only way to know whether it is in your home is to test for it.

In Kentucky, the geology is working against you. Limestone karst formations across the central part of the state release radon into the soil at higher rates than the national average. Clay-capped soils trap that gas under foundation slabs and crawl space floors, where it builds up before finding its way into the rooms above.
The federal action level is 4.0 pCi/L. The EPA recommends mitigation at or above that number. Lower-but-still-elevated levels often warrant mitigation too, especially in homes with finished basements or long-term occupants. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States after smoking, and the only cause that exposes the entire household.
Unique specialized solutions for unique specialized problems. Every Aqua Lock recommendation starts with the radon level the test actually shows, not a one-size-fits-all package.
When to Test, and Who Should Test
Radon has no sensory signs. A house can register 8.0 pCi/L and feel exactly the same as a house that registers 0.5. Testing is the only way to know.
Common reasons Kentucky homeowners test:
- Buying or selling a home (radon test is a routine inspection-stage request in most KY real estate transactions)
- Finishing a basement (more time spent below grade means more exposure)
- A neighbor's home tested high (radon is hyper-local; one street can vary by a factor of three)
- The last test was 5 or more years ago, or the house has never been tested
- The home was just purchased and no prior test record exists

How a Radon Mitigation System Actually Works
A radon mitigation system is not a filter. It does not clean the air inside the home. It pulls the gas out from under the foundation before it has a chance to get in.
The standard method is active soil depressurization. A sealed vent pipe is installed through the basement slab or crawl space floor. A radon-rated fan, mounted outdoors or in an unconditioned space, creates negative pressure under the slab. Soil gas takes the path of least resistance up the vent and out a discharge point above the roofline, well above any windows or eaves. All visible slab cracks and the floor-to-wall joint are sealed to keep the negative pressure from leaking back into the basement.
The system runs continuously. The fan is the wearing part, which is why every Aqua Lock radon system carries a 5-year warranty on the fan specifically.
Post-installation testing confirms the level drop. Systems we install routinely test at or below 2.7 pCi/L after activation, well under the EPA 4.0 action level.
What Aqua Lock Installs
Every home is different. The mitigation method depends on the foundation type, the radon level on the pre-mitigation test, and what is already happening in the basement or crawl space.
Active Soil Depressurization (ASD)
The standard radon system for poured-concrete and slab-on-grade basements. Sealed vent pipe through the slab, radon-rated fan, discharge above the roofline.
Sub-Membrane Depressurization
The right method for crawl spaces. A vapor barrier seals the crawl space floor, and a radon fan depressurizes the space below the membrane. Often paired with crawl space encapsulation when the homeowner is solving both moisture and radon at once.
Block Wall Depressurization
For homes with hollow-core concrete block foundations, where radon can travel through the wall cores. A separate vent system pulls the gas from inside the block walls before it can reach the living space.
Pre- and Post-Mitigation Testing
Every job includes a baseline test to confirm there is a radon problem and a post-mitigation test 48 to 72 hours after activation to quantify the actual reduction.
System Maintenance and Fan Replacement.
Fans last on average 10 years. The 5-year warranty covers the highest-failure component. Aqua Lock services the systems we install.
Our Radon Mitigation Process
The process is built to be transparent from the first phone call to the final post-mitigation test.
Free Inspection
A Certified Structural Inspector walks the home, identifies foundation type and likely radon entry points, and collects a baseline radon measurement. 30 to 45 minutes, no obligation, no hard sell.
System Design
Custom routing of the vent pipe to minimize visual impact and maximize performance. Written quote with the warranty terms in writing before any work begins.
Installation
Aqua Lock crews handle the install start to finish. Foreman on site. Surfaces protected, dust suppression running. Most radon systems install in one day.
Post-Mitigation Test
An independent test 48 to 72 hours after activation confirms the actual level drop. You see the number in writing.
Final Walkthrough
Nothing closes out until you have reviewed the post-mitigation result and signed off. Payment is collected after.
Most radon inspections are scheduled within 24 to 48 hours.

What Radon Mitigation Costs
The honest answer is that it varies, and the range matters less than what is driving the number.
Three things drive radon mitigation costs. First, foundation type: a basement slab is straightforward; a hollow-core block foundation requires a separate sealing sequence; a crawl space adds a sub-membrane install. Second, vent pipe routing: the cleanest, shortest discharge path costs less than a route that has to navigate finished spaces. Third, radon level: a marginal reading near 4.0 pCi/L often needs a smaller system than a reading of 15 or 20.
Most homeowners are surprised that radon mitigation lands well below 1 percent of home value. Compared with the long-term health stake the system is solving for, the math is straightforward.
Financing is available. The 5-year warranty on the fan and the Lifetime Transferable Warranty on the broader waterproofing system both transfer with the home if you sell.
Radon and Selling a Home in Kentucky
In Kentucky real estate transactions, radon comes up at inspection. Many buyers request a test as a standard contingency, especially in finished-basement homes and high-radon zip codes.
A mitigated home is a closing-table asset, not a liability. Aqua Lock provides the homeowner with the pre-mitigation level, the post-mitigation level, and the system warranty documentation. Realtors familiar with the local market consistently tell us a documented, warrantied radon system removes one of the most common objections at the inspection stage of a sale.
The Lifetime Transferable Warranty on Aqua Lock waterproofing work transfers with the home. The 5-year radon fan warranty does the same.

Why Homeowners Choose Aqua Lock for Radon Work
Radon mitigation is one of those services where it is easy to install a quick system and move on. Aqua Lock was built to do the opposite. Every inspection ends with a written scope, a real number, and a real warranty.

“Our competitors often only quote the maximum, most expensive scope for Foundation Work, because they see it as easy money. We built Aqua Lock to do the opposite. Every inspection ends with options and education, not just a single price tag for the most expensive solution.”

Radon Mitigation FAQs
What is radon, and how does it get into a home?
Radon is a naturally occurring gas produced when uranium in soil and rock breaks down. It seeps up through the soil and enters homes through cracks in the foundation slab, the floor-to-wall joint, hollow block walls, sump pits, and any other path into the basement or crawl space. Most of central Kentucky is in EPA Radon Zone 1, the highest predicted indoor radon zone.
How do I know if my home has high radon?
The only way to know is to test. Radon has no smell, no color, and no taste. A short-term test (48 to 72 hours) gives a quick reading. A long-term test (over 90 days) gives a more accurate annual average. Aqua Lock includes a baseline test on every radon inspection.
What level of radon is considered safe?
The EPA recommends action at 4.0 pCi/L or higher. The agency notes there is no truly “safe” level, and homeowners in the 2 to 4 pCi/L range may still choose mitigation, especially in finished-basement and long-occupancy homes. Aqua Lock systems are designed to drop levels well below 4.0.
How long does a radon mitigation system take to install?
Most residential radon systems install in one day. More complex foundation types (block wall, multi-zone) can run longer. The post-mitigation test happens 48 to 72 hours after activation.
Will the system make my house noisy or unsightly?
A properly designed system runs quietly. The fan is mounted outdoors or in an unconditioned space, and vent pipes are routed for minimum visual impact. Most Aqua Lock customers tell us they forget the system is there.
Does the system need maintenance?
The fan is the wearing part. Average fan life is around 10 years; replacements are simple and the 5-year warranty covers the most critical period.
Does the warranty transfer if I sell the house?
Yes. The 5-year warranty on the radon fan and the Lifetime Transferable Warranty on the broader waterproofing system both transfer with the home.
How quickly can Aqua Lock schedule a radon inspection?
Most inspections are scheduled within 24 to 48 hours of your call.
